Lenovo ThinkPad T15g Gen 2 Review

Lenovo ThinkPad T15g Gen 2 Overview

The ThinkPad T15g Gen 2 is a 15″ laptop model which some of you may have already guessed from the naming convention. One thing to note is that the ThinkPad line of laptops is about as plain looking as you can get, so don’t expect any wild branding or RGB lighting with this laptop – it is built for getting work done – period. That being said, I appreciate Lenovo sticking with the all-black design, and the external surfaces feature a matte plastic finish all around. A small ThinkPad logo is placed in the top corner of the lid, and the red dot over the “i” illuminates when the system is powered on, while a small brushed metal Lenovo nameplate adorns an edge spot.

The bottom of the laptop is quite plain as well, aside from the plentiful ventilation cutouts to assist the dual fans with keeping the internal components cooled.

The laptop itself measures in at 14.8″ W x 9.9″ D x 1.2″ H, which isn’t overly large for the specifications of the system and the inclusion of a 15″ screen. This definitely isn’t a thin and light model however, as our configuration of the T15g Gen 2 weighs in at 6.33 lbs.

Regarding the port configuration, Lenovo has done a great job providing a variety of ports to support a mixture of current peripherals and external devices. On the left side of the laptop is a single HDMI 2.1/2.0 port, a single Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 1 port with always-on power, an optional Nano-SIM slot, and a 3.5mm headset port. There is also a ventilation opening on this side to support exhaust flow from the internal fans.

Moving to the right side of the laptop is an SD card slot as well as another Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, and a Kensington lock slot. Another ventilation opening is found here as well.

Around back are many additional ports. From left to right are a single RJ-45 connector, power in, a single USB-C port, and two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports. Additionally, on the left and right edges of the rear section are more ventilation openings.

The T15g Gen 2 utilizes a dual-hinge design for the screen, and I found them to be plenty sturdy for keeping the screen in place, while at the same time offering smooth opening and adjustment when needed.

Opening up the laptop reveals the 15.6″ Full HD screen with LED backlighting. Lenovo does offer additional screen types, with brightness offerings between 300 and 600 nits, and both FHD and UHD resolutions in their T15g Gen 2 line up, and it left us a bit surprised that the higher resolution wasn’t chosen with this configuration of hardware. That being said, the fact that other screen options are available is great news for those that may want to customize their loadout. Surrounding the screen itself is a pretty wide bezel by today’s standards – no “zero-bezel” design here.

At the top of the screen is a small, Windows Hello compatible, 720p webcam with a sliding privacy shutter, as well as a stereo array of far-field microphones.

At the base of the laptop is a full keyboard layout, with numpad. This keyboard offers multiple levels of white backlighting, and is also spill resistant. The keys themselves feature the traditional Lenovo design with slightly curved bottoms, and the iconic “red dot” is present for screen navigation. Along the top of the keyboard is a perforated section which conceals a pair of 2 watt speakers that are Dolby Atmos certified, alongside an illuminated power button.

Beneath the keyboard is a multi-point touchpad with integrated buttons and tactile feedback, as well as the additional left, center, and right buttons that are typically used with the track point. To the right of the touchpad is the standard contact square for fingerprint security, and a TPM 2.0 module is also included in order to support additional security features.
