Thermaltake BigTyp 14 Pro CPU Cooler Review

Installation

Installation for the BigTyp 14 Pro is fairly easy to do if you follow the instructions. However I did encounter a few annoyances along the way.

First step to do is to place the rubber washers onto the two mounting brackets. These washers will end up against the upper side of the motherboard to prevent it from short circuiting.

To attach the support brackets to the cooler you have to place them above the copper base and then fasten the screws from the bottom up. I actually attempted to attach the brackets to the bottom of the base since most of the other coolers I’ve reviewed have had this method, but I wasn’t long before I realized this wasn’t the proper way to attach them.

The next step is to apply the thermal grease provided by Thermaltake. There’s quite a bit in the pouch they provide, but if you want to save the grease be sure to seal it up with a piece of tape to prevent it from drying out.

To attach the cooler to the motherboard you will have to align the holes on the motherboard with the mounting brackets, it doesn’t really matter which way it’s placed, and hold the cooler firmly to the motherboard. Then while attempting to hold these together gently flip the motherboard over, or at least give yourself enough room, to attach the plastic washer and the nut on each of the four screws that should be protruding through the back of the motherboard. The screw threads on the mounting brackets could be just a little bit longer because it is somewhat difficult to hold the cooler tightly to the motherboard and attempt to fasten the nuts on all four threads at the same time.

Note: This step may be easier with two people.

Once it’s installed on the motherboard you’ll notice that it does take up quite a bit of space on the motherboard.

I did encounter another problem trying to install my motherboard back into my case. The BigTyp 14 Pro rubs up against the top of my case leaving me no choice but to disable the fan it’s rubbing up against. Not only that I found it difficult to attach some of the screws to fasten my motherboard and found difficulty trying to attach the 8pin power connection to my motherboard. This cooler probably isn’t the greatest choice for cases with an upper mounted motherboard like the NZXT Tempest used in this review.

It doesn’t look too bad once it’s installed though. It blends in with darker hardware inside of the case.

The blue LEDs on the fan aren’t quite as bright as some might expect them to be. While they aren’t nearly as bright as my case fan, they still provide some lighting for the heatsink.
