Devices designed ruin someone’s computer is nothing new, I’m sure some of you remember the floppy disk bomb that would melt inside of someone’s disk drive. Well it looks like it has been reincarnated (sort of) in the form of a USB flash drive that is designed to electrocute your computer from the inside out!
An article about this USB drive bomb was first published on Russian website Habrahabr and has since been translated into english on Kukuru Hub where its design and intended effect are described. Obviously we are not going to go over how to build on here, but the basic idea is to build a USB drive with hardware that will pulse a high-voltage charge into a USB port and fry everything that is nearby.
Quote from the article:
“When we connect it up to the USB port, an inverting DC/DC converter runs and charges capacitors to -110V. When the voltage is reached, the DC/DC is switched off. At the same time, the filed transistor opens. It is used to apply the -110V to signal lines of the USB interface. When the voltage on capacitors increases to -7V, the transistor closes and the DC/DC starts. The loop runs till everything possible is broken down.”
We have no idea of this will actually work. We would assume it would do more damage to a laptop rather than a PC because the USB ports on a laptop are closer to other components. Check out the original article to see what this drive is all about.
