WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS Review

Performance Testing & Power Consumption
To test the performance of the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra we will first be using LAN Speed Test Lite that sends a file across the network and records the speed. We tested 50MB, 256MB and 512MB file sizes. We ran this test at RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD modes.

Next we mapped our network drive in order to test with CrystalDiskMark, a popular hard drive and SSD benchmarking program. Again we ran this test at RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD modes.

As you can see we have very impressive speeds here. Doing real world transfers we saw around 90-100 MB/s in all of our tests.

Finally we did a few power consumption tests using a Kill-A-Watt meter. We took recordings at initial startup, during a file transfer, during idle, and finally when the NAS is in sleep mode.

power

So when the NAS powers up and the drives spin up the unit uses around ~29 watts of power. During normal operation you should see around ~12 watts of using and that will jump up to ~16 during file transfers. When the unit as asleep it will only consume ~5-6 watts of power.
