Acer has made its debut in the retail PC power supply market with the Predator GX850. This new line currently features only one model, an 850W fully modular ATX 3.0 80 Plus Gold unit. It’s built in a compact SFX form factor, supports 20% semi-fanless operation, and includes a PCIe 5.1 connector. European retailer listings suggest that the unit will be priced between $130 and $140 in the US, similar to comparable models from brands like Corsair and Cooler Master.
The PSU meets ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.1 standards, so it includes a 12VHPWR connector for direct compatibility with high-performance GPUs. Meanwhile, competitors like Corsair are introducing PSUs that support ATX 3.1, which includes the updated and safer 12V-2×6 cable type, while remaining fully backward compatible.
The Acer Predator GX850 offers several notable features, including full modularity, allowing users to connect only the necessary cables to improve cable management and airflow. It also uses “Japanese Primary 105°C capacitors,” known for their reliability and commonly found in high-quality PSUs.
Acer’s new PSU features a semi-fanless mode, where the 90mm fan remains off until the PSU reaches a 20% load, ensuring silent operation under lighter loads. The unit achieves 90% efficiency at a 50% load, earning it an 80 Plus Gold certification from Acer.
In recent years, Acer has demonstrated its ability to innovate in the PC components market with its Predator graphics cards. However, this new PSU is likely a rebranded design from an OEM such as FSP, SeaSonic, or SuperFlower, similar to many other modern PSU offerings.
Lastly, European listings for the Acer Predator GX850 SFX PSU show prices in GBP, EUR, and SEK, suggesting a U.S. retail price around $130 to $140. While this price is reasonable, it might not be particularly enticing for a new PSU brand, especially considering the 2-year warranty, which is relatively short for the market.
