Gigabyte Z490 AORUS Ultra Motherboard Review

Final Thoughts

Gigabyte’s Z490 AORUS Ultra sort of sits in the middle of their AORUS Z490 motherboard line. With that you have a very solid feature-set. You are going to be what you expect from the Z490 chipset as far as 2.5GbE LAN, USB 3.2 gen 2, M.2 support, etc. Gigabyte has added some very nice features to this board as well, the first is 802.11ax WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0. You are also getting three M.2 slots, all of which have thermal guards.

Next you have that very sleek AORUS motherboard design that we know Gigabyte for. The heatsinks and RGB lighting go very well together. The board makes use of a 12 phase digital VRM solution that features 55A DrMOS Power Stages without doublers, so the power phases connect directly to the CPU. Cooling the power delivery components you have Gigabyte’s Fins-Array II heatsinks which actually increase surface area by 300% compared to traditional heatsinks and also improves thermal efficiency with better airflow and heat exchange. With this setup you shouldn’t have any problem overclocking your 10th generation Intel processor.

Like many motherboards this board is Gen4 ready for Rocket Lake-S processors when they come along. The top M.2 slot and top 2 PCI-Express x16 slots are ready for Gen4 hardware. Talking about those slots they are all metal reinforced including the memory and power connections as well.

Another thing I really like about this board is the number of fan headers. There are a total of 8 hybrid fan headers and of course you can control these with Gigabyte’s Smart Fan 5 software. If you are doing any overclocking or just need to troubleshoot your board the addition of the POST code display will definitely help you out.

One thing I think needs some improvement is Gigabyte’s motherboard companion software. At this point (link most motherboard companion software) it just seems dated and on top of that the APP Center would not download and install apps so we had to do each one individually, which was a little inconvenient.

Right now this board is selling at our favorite online retailer for $299.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Gigabyte Z490 AORUS Ultra Motherboard a 9 out of 10 score.

– Sleek design and RGB lighting
– 12 phase digital VRM solution
