Most hard drive docks all look the same and none of them are unique, probably because most companies have used the same OEM design. Icy Dock decided to be different and change things up with a totally new design, something that looks cool and is unique. Also some hard drive docks only support USB; the MB881US-1S-1 supports both USB and eSATA, although the cable on the eSATA bracket was so small it did not reach the SATA ports on my motherboard.
I also like that you could take the dock off of the stand and take it with you if need be. Even though the included USB cable has a double end the dock cannot run only on USB power, at least not with the drive that we tested. So it is not all that portable since you have to bring the power adapter with you as well.
The Icy Dock MB881US-1S-1 sells for right around $45, which is about the same as the other docks out there. If I had a choice I would definitely choose the MB881US-1S-1 over the other ones although if you plan on using the eSATA PCI bracket you are probably going to need to get one with a longer cable. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Icy Dock MB881US-1S-1 Hard Drive Dock a 9 out of 10 score!
– Unique design
– USB and eSATA capable
– Detachable dock
– Traveling case included
– Cable on eSATA bracket is too short
