MSI Spatium M480 Play Gen4 NVMe Solid State Drive Review

MSI Spatium M480 Play Overview

Taking a first look at the Spatium M480 Play the first thing that really stands out is the heatsink. MSI has gone with a pretty and stylish pre-installed heatsink. It is half black and half grey with an MSI dragon emblem on one end. I do have to say it is one of the best looking heatsinks I’ve seen on an M.2 drive besides the one on the WD_Black SN750.

This drive is your typical M.2 2280 drive so it is 80 mm long and 22 mm wide. This means it is easily going to fit into an open slot on your motherboard or in a PlayStation 5. The heatsink on the drive is a bit thicker than some of the others we’ve seen, but it is low-profile enough where you won’t run into any clearance issues if your M.2 slot sits below a graphics card slot.

On the backside of the drive there is a sticker that has the model and series number on it.

Under the hood of the drive is the Phison PS5018-E18 8-channel PCI-Express 4.0 controller, Micron 176-layer 3D TLC NAND, and 2GB of SK hynix DDR4-2666 cache.
