NVIDIA revealed that the RTX 4070 with lower-spec memory chips is set to launch in September. While the exact release date remains unconfirmed and retailers haven’t officially listed it, that is beginning to change. Newegg has now added the new model to its site, though it’s currently out of stock.

The specific model in question is the ASUS RTX 4070 GDDR6 EVO. It’s almost identical to the original GDDR6X version, with the only difference being the slower 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory (1 Gbps slower than G6X). While NVIDIA asserts that this won’t result in noticeable performance differences, no reviewers have tested the new model yet, so that claim remains unverified.

It has now been confirmed that neither Newegg nor ASUS plan to price the GDDR6 version lower than the GDDR6X model. Both are listed at $569, which is lower than the RTX 4070’s original MSRP of $599. However, it’s important to note that NVIDIA reduced the MSRP for this SKU to $549 in January, making the new price actually higher than that adjustment.

For comparison, the retailer is also offering a white EVO edition for $554, meaning the GDDR6 version is currently priced higher than the original, unless color is a priority. It’s also worth reminding readers that ASUS GPUs are generally more expensive, and the OC (overclocked) models tend to be even less cost-effective.

NVIDIA has not mandated board partners to indicate the memory version on the packaging, leaving it up to manufacturers to clarify whether the card uses the older or newer memory technology. ASUS does provide this information, and fortunately, most retailers are clearly displaying it as well. The key takeaway is to avoid buying the GDDR6 model if the GDDR6X version is available at the same price—there’s no benefit in choosing the slower version.
