OCZ Vertex 460 240 GB Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts
It looks like OCZ is starting 2014 the right way with the launch of the Vertex 460 Solid State Drive. This drive takes what was already good in the Vertex 450 drive and makes it better, especially when it comes to mixed workload and sustained performance numbers. Many SSD makers will flash up their sequential speeds, but how do those speeds do over time? Or in a mixed workload environment? OCZ has designed the Vertex 460 for those type of situations.

The Barefoot 3 M10 controller is very impressive and has very constant performance over many of our tests. On top of that it does not have the shortcomings of SandForce-based drives when it comes to incompressible data. For those wondering in ATTO Disk Benchmark the Vertex 460 had read and write speeds of 551 MB/s and 530 MB/s respectively. Many of our other tests showed very close to the same results.

OCZ is one of the last companies to still include a 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch mounting bracket with their solid state drives, at no extra cost either I might add. On top of that you are getting the Acronis True Image HD software for free and who can forget about the “I Love My SSD” sticker. These extras definitely add value to the drive.

With the acquisition by Toshiba OCZ will be following suit with Samsung with almost all parts of their drives being designed and created in-house. This will not only allow for greater performance tweaks via firmware updates, but also lower costs. Now that this drive has 19 nm MLC toggle mode flash OCZ will be getting it at lower costs. The MSRP for the 240 GB drive that we reviewed today is $189.99, with the 120 GB and 480 GB versions being $99 and $359.99 respectively. Remember the drive also comes with a 3 year warranty.

If you are looking at getting a solid state drive right now the Vertex 460 is a great choice and one drive we can definitely recommend. Overall ThinkComputers gives the OCZ Vertex 460 240 GB Solid State Drive a 10 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!
