ORICO M.2 Solid State Drive Enclosure Review

ORICO M.2 Solid State Drive Enclosure Overview

Taking a first look at the ORICO M.2 Solid State Drive Enclosure it is a pretty sleek device. It is not much larger than an actual M.2 drive, just a bit thicker. It has the ORICO logo on the top. Since it is so small it makes it easy to put in your pocket or throw in a laptop bag.

Flipping over to the back we have a little bit of information. The entire enclosure is made of aluminum alloy, which not only is going to protect your drive inside, but also act as a heatsink for your installed M.2 drive. I would have liked to see some type of rubber feet on the bottom of the enclosure. The aluminum alloy design is tough, but having feet will not only keep it in place on your desk, but protect your desk a little too.

On one end of the enclosure you’ll find a USB Type-C connection. This is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 capable connection, but of course is backwards compatible with USB 3.1 gen 1 too.

On the opposite end is a small activity LED and a place to put a locking screw in.

Since there is no locking screw installed the drive easily opens up to reveal what is inside. The PCB inside has support for not only 2280 M.2 drives, but also 2260, 2242, and 2230 drives. The PCB uses a standard m-key configuration so an mSATA drive will not work in this enclosure. At the end of the PCB is the USB Type-C connection. This enclosure uses the JMicron JMS582 USB 3.1 Gen to to PCIe Gen3x2 bridge controller. Also on the top lid of the enclosure is thermal tape, this will help the enclosure dissipate heat from the M.2 SSD you install.
