PCI-SIG Confirms Samsung 990 PRO M.2 PCIe Gen5 x4 SSD

PCI-SIG has just listed Samsung’s 990 PRO SSD as a PCIe 5.0 x4 compliant add-in card. This listing not only confirms the product name but also the fact that the consumer storage is verified for Gen5 specs with its support for PCIe 5.0. The Samsung 990 PRO SSD features the M.2 interface, but the leak doesn’t contain enough information to confirm the size of the drive.

This is not the first time that Samsung is working on the launch of PCIe Gen5 PM1743 SSDs. It has already done so, but with Enterprise SSDs. Those SSDs are 2.5 to 3-inches and offer random speeds of up to 13000 MB/s and an IOPS of 2500K.

As compared to Gen4 products, these SSDs deliver 1.9 times faster speeds.

Soon enough all X670 and B650 AMD AM5 motherboard series will support Gen 5.0 storage. For now, they can be fully utilized on Alder Lake systems. As for the AMD 600 series chipset, conformity to PCIe 5.0 is optional for GPUs. However, all the mid-range and high-end motherboard series will support the Gen5 storage.
