WD My Passport Ultra Metal Edition 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Review

Final Thoughts
The My Passport line of portable hard drives have been a staple for WD for quite a while now. They provide easy on the go storage, which is great for people who have laptops and ultrabooks that do not have a lot of storage. These drives also are great as local backups drives and storage drives for media players. The My Passport Ultra is a USB 3.0 drive so you are going to have very fast transfer speeds. We saw read and write speeds of over 100 MB/s, which is more than fast enough to stream media.

WD sent us the Metal Edition of the drive, which just looks amazing! It has an aluminum casing which you really need to see in person to appreciate. This also adds another layer of protection to the drive so you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged.

WD ships the drive with their own software that includes WD SmartWare, WD Drive Utilities, and WD Security. The SmartWare software allows you to easily set up a full system backup or just to backup individual files and folders. That’s why I think this drive is perfect for local backups. WD security will completely secure your drive with a password so if you are worried about sensitive information you have 256-bit hardware encryption.

So as I said we took a look at the Metal Edition of the drive, but it also comes in a normal version as well. Capacity of the drive ranges from 1TB to 3TB and you have a variety of different color choices. Right now you can pick up the 1TB Metal Edition at my favorite online retailer for $79.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the WD My Passport Ultra Metal Edition 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive a 10 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!
