ASUS ROG Ally X Handheld Teased; Features AMD Ryzen Z1 APU , Bigger Battery, More RAM & Storage

ASUS has teased the all-new ROG Ally X gaming handheld, an enhanced iteration of the original model, powered by the same AMD Ryzen Z1 APUs. Last year marked the debut of the ASUS ROG Ally, pioneering the use of AMD’s latest Ryzen Z1 APUs, built on the Zen 4 core architecture. Now, a year later, ASUS is elevating the handheld gaming experience by introducing the beefed-up ROG Ally X model.

The ASUS ROG Ally X utilizes the AMD Ryzen Z1 APU series, but unlike its predecessors, it exclusively features the higher-end Ryzen Z1 Extreme model. This top-tier APU, designed for handheld devices, boasts 8 cores, 16 threads, clock speeds of up to 5.1 GHz, 12 RDNA 3 compute units, and 24 MB of cache. With configurable power consumption ranging from 9W to 30W and enhanced cooling in the ROG Ally X, users can anticipate superior performance from this remarkably efficient chip.

The ROG Ally X undergoes significant enhancements in both battery and storage capacities. The battery receives a notable upgrade, boasting 30-40% larger capacities, deemed a substantial improvement by ASUS, resulting in double the gaming time compared to the original model. Furthermore, the storage now supports NVMe M.2 SSDs, accommodating up to 2280 form factor drives ranging from 4 to 8 TB. Additionally, the memory sees an improvement with support for LPDDR5X-7500, further enhancing the overall performance.

In terms of dimensions, the ASUS ROG Ally X is anticipated to maintain the same chassis and screen size as its predecessor. Users can expect the familiar 7″ FHD panel with a rated refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. Addressing a significant concern from the previous model, ASUS has relocated the SD card slot away from the internal heatsink to resolve the malfunctioning issue, ensuring its elimination. Additionally, while the company has teased other physical changes to the handheld, details remain undisclosed.
