HP P700 Portable Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

When it is all said and done there is a lot to like about HP’s P700 portable solid state drive. When it comes to performance this drive lives up to its advertised speeds of 1000 MB/s for both read and write and it has been one of the fastest USB 3.2 gen 2 drives in terms of write speeds. That means this drive will make a perfect external game drive, editing drive, and much more.

One thing I love about portable solid state drives is actually how small they are. The P700 is small enough to easily fit in your pocket or throw in a top compartment of your laptop bag or backpack. The drive itself has a metal cases, which will protect it from most things, but there is no IP rating or anything like that. One thing I did notice was that the drive would pick up fingerprints really easily.

HP does provide a pretty cool cable holder that is magnetized so it will stick to the bottom of the drive so you never forget your cable. The included cable is very short though, even for a portable solid state drive. If you were to connect this drive to a motherboard it would just be hanging there. Another thing I would like to see is higher capacity, while 1TB is great a 2TB version would really be ideal for a lot of people, especially if you plan to use this drive as a game drive.

Right now this drive is selling at our favorite online retailer for $170, which is a bit high considering you can get the ADATA SE800 1TB for only $139.99 and it is IP68 rated (albeit a bit slower) or the Sabrent Rocket Nano for $158.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the HP P700 Portable Solid State Drive an 8 out of 10 score.
