The main issue with Windows handhelds right now is the operating system. It’s overloaded with settings, update tools, and managing multiple game launchers is a real headache. The Xbox app for Windows is especially frustrating to use—I can’t even count how many times it’s randomly logged me out for no apparent reason.

Microsoft has finally recognized the need to improve the Xbox experience on Windows. They’ve already launched a Compact Mode for the app, making it more user-friendly on smaller screens. Today, they also revealed that a Compact Mode for the Xbox Game Bar is on the way.

The Xbox Game Bar is one of Windows’ standout gaming features, offering tools to record media, control music, check system performance, and connect with the Xbox community. However, it falls short when it comes to handheld devices.

Microsoft has acknowledged that changes are needed, and the new Compact Mode will let users switch between panels using the device bumpers. This will make it easier to access widgets that display recently played games or games already running, much like a real Xbox. While the feature isn’t available to everyone yet, as Microsoft is currently gathering feedback from Xbox Insiders, anyone can sign up to be part of that group.
