Well if for some reason you decided to get the disc version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on PlayStation 5, got home and wanted to load it up, you would be very disappointed to find out that the disc version only contained 72MB of data, which when loaded gets the console to download the 151 GB of the games payload over the internet. This would be a nightmare for someone who has limited internet connectivity or a data cap.
Apparently beyond just acting as a downloader for the real game, the disc acts as a hardware DRM for the game. So even though you’ve downloaded the game, you’ll need to keep the disc inserted to play it. A tracking site that does catalog whether or not a physical game can be played without any download or sort of patch reveals that 99% of disc-based games still do not require downloads to play. And to be clear you cannot even play the single-player version of the game without downloading it.
