Valve Releases Proton 9.0 Update With Support For High Core Count CPUs, New Games Support & Better NVIDIA GPU Performance

Valve rolled out the Proton 9.0 update, enhancing compatibility for NVIDIA GPUs and high core count CPUs. Proton, increasingly favored, particularly with the launch of Steam Deck, serves as a vital link between Windows and Linux, enabling Linux users to enjoy compatible Windows games.

The latest Valve Proton 9.0 update introduces support for additional titles and numerous optimization changes aimed at enhancing user experience. Alongside these new titles, the update delivers improved performance for users with high-core CPUs. Previously, games like Far Cry 4 and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition imposed core limitations on high-end CPUs, leading to degraded performance. However, the latest update has reportedly removed these restrictions, allowing players to fully utilize their processors’ power, even though older classics may not require extensive core usage.

A notable inclusion in the latest update is the automatic activation of NVIDIA’s NVAPI, a software development kit tailored for specific hardware, particularly NVIDIA GPUs. This implementation is anticipated to significantly enhance performance for NVIDIA users on Linux, thereby improving the overall gaming experience. Gaming on Linux has historically faced limitations due to the platform’s lack of access to contemporary software resources.
